How Cut-off Dates Work in Recruitment and Competitive Examinations
When applying for competitive examinations (such as SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS, UPSC Civil Services, NDA, CDS, IBPS PO, Clerk, SBI, Railway RRB, and Police recruitment), one of the primary qualification criteria is the Age Eligibility Range.
Most candidates calculate their age from today's date; however, examination notifications explicitly stipulate a cut-off anchor date, such as: "Candidates must be between 18 and 27 years of age as of 01-08-2026". If an applicant exceeds the upper age limit or falls short by even a single day on that cut-off date, the online portal automatically disqualifies the application. Knowing your exact age in years, months, and days is therefore critical.
Common Competitive Exam Age Criteria & Cut-off Standards:
| Examination Name | General Category Age Limit | Standard Cut-off Anchor Date |
|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL / CHSL | 18 to 27 / 30 / 32 years (by post) | Usually 1st August (or 1st January) |
| UPSC Civil Services (IAS/IPS) | 21 to 32 years | 1st August of Exam Year |
| IBPS Bank PO / Clerk | 20 to 30 years (PO) / 20 to 28 (Clerk) | 1st of July or Notification Month |
| State Police Services | 18 to 22 / 25 years | 1st July or 1st January |
